Mar Marcos has a PhD in History (1990) and is currently Assistant Professor in Ancient History/History of Religions in Antiquity at the University of Cantabria (Spain). She is head of the Department of Historical Sciences. She has done post-doctoral research at the University of Oxford (1990-1992), and has been Visiting Scholar in Wolfson College (Univ. of Oxford, 1998) and at the Université Paris 13 Villataneuse (2007).
Her research interests include the History of Religions in Greece and Rome, Early Christianity and Judaism, Religious Pluralism and Conflict, Women and Religion in Antiquity. She is currently directing a research project with support from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Education on the theme “Religious Pluralism and Conflict in the Roman Empire (III-V century AD)”.
She has written several books (Women and Religion in Late Antique Rome (AD 312-410), Santander 1990; Religious Freedom and Intolerance in the Roman Empire (with J. F. Ubina), Madrid, 2007; Religious Tolerance and Intolerance in the Ancient Mediterranean: Themes and Problems (with R. Teja), Madrid 2008; Heretics in History, Madrid, 2009, all of them in Spanish), and a number of articles and chapters on religion in Classical Antiquity.
She has been Membership Secretary of the European Association for the Study of Religions (EASR) since 2005, and is a Member of the Steering Committee of the Women Scholars Network of the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR).
