Amy L. Allocco is Professor of Religious Studies at Elon University, USA, where she also serves as the founding director of the Multifaith Scholars Program. Allocco was trained in South Asian religions with a specialization in vernacular Hinduism and has research interests in narrative and healing traditions, religious change and ritual innovation, death practices, and class and gender in urban India. She has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork on Hindu goddesses, ancestor rituals, and performance traditions in Tamil-speaking South India, most recently on a class of Hindu drummer-priests called pampaikkārar with support from Fulbright and the American Institute of Indian Studies (2023-2025). She is completing a book project titled Living with the Dead in Hindu South India and has a co-edited volume, Sweetening and Intensification: Current Shaping Hindu Practices, slated to be published in Fall 2025. Allocco has also carried out field research in Tamil-speaking communities in Sri Lanka and written about interreligious studies, mentoring undergraduate research, and global learning.
